August 30, 2012

It's so hot in Houston that the building (Sewall Hall, Rice University) housing my office is participating in power rationing.  All of a sudden the building gets very quiet - the air conditioner is off.  Then about 15 or 20 minutes later there is a very LOUD screeching sound as the antiquated system turns back on.

It sounds like the building is being hit by shrapnel.  I feel sorry for the new students.  It must really scare them.

The month of September is right around the corner.  It is my least favorite month in Houston.  I've been living here for over 30 years but I'm still a yankee at heart.  I always feel like September signals cooler weather.  NOT IN HOUSTON!  I think September is usually the hottest month of the year.  Plus,  it's the most popular month for hurricanes to visit the area.

BUT, one more month until October.  The weather cools down in October.  The festival and bazaar season revs up in October.  You can even go outside at noon on some days without immediately breaking into a sweat.

August 17 - 19 2012: ASG Conference

I had a wonderful weekend participating in the ASG Conference.  I took 2 classes on Friday - Serger-y and Screen Printing.

My friend, Mary Haper, traveled from her new home in Wyoming and was at the conference, too.

On Friday evening some ASG members modeled their creations at a runway show.

On Saturday I spent the afternoon on the exhibit floor - hearing speakers and shopping.  It was really exhausting.  Saturday evening a group of us, Mary, Marguerite, Barbara, Reba, Rebecca and myself went to the BlackFinn restaurant.  Rebecca's son is the executive chef.  We had great food and great service.

I went back on Sunday for more shopping.  I was ready for another evening out at a restaurant.  My friends were busy checking out of the hotel and driving home.  So, I went home and read over my new patterns.

August 11, 2012

We had a Red Hat luncheon at Larry's BarBQue restaurant.  It was organized by our Queen, Marie Christopher in honor of Mary Haper.  Mary was visiting from Wyoming.

August 21, 2012: Kenny is ONE year old today!

I am so happy that I have little Kenny in my life.  He is such a beautiful baby boy.  Kevin and Tomoko seem so happy together.

I have been a grandma for one whole year as of today.  I can't wait to visit my son, Kevin and his family this November.

August 4, 2012: Tomorrow is our 12th anniversary.

Two years ago today I was the handicapped one.  I had just had my torn achilles fixed and my knee replaced.  The future could only be brighter, right?

Was I ever wrong!  I still think that the horrible accident couldn't possibly have happened to Jim.  I must just be having a nightmare.

Update:

I found out a couple of days after our 12th anniversary that my husband had proposed to Claudia and even given her an engraved engagement ring in July.  I will never understand how he could have treated me so badly.  He had a post office box set up so she could send him mail, too.  He would have Lupita drive him there to pick up his mail.

When I found out about his betrayal I told him that he needed to move out.  He "fired" Claudia and asked if he could stay.  I thought that maybe his accident had given him a brain injury so I took him back to TIRR for brain testing.  His results were normal.

Despite that I continued marriage counseling with him until December.  During our last session he announced that he not only didn't love me, he didn't even like me and he wasn't sorry for what he did.

Two days later on 12-12-2012 I filed for divorce.

August 3, 2012: Mom turns 91!

Mom had a nice birthday today.  The assisted living home, Bedford House, decorated the dining room for her and had a bingo party.  I brought a butterfly birthday cake for her.  Andy gave her Magnum PI and Columbo videos.  Mom has the hots for Tom Selleck!

Lupita and Jim came to celebrate, too.  The home was ordering a special dinner - pizza.

Mom got a bit confused with all the excitement and visitors.  But, she really enjoyed herself and seems very much at home at Bedford House.
